Can you actually make $100/hr with this user research platform? Respondent.io review.

Is Respondent.io the Best Paid User Research Platform? My Experience

Welcome back to another Tried and True blog post, where I put viral side hustles to the test to see if they truly pay off.

If you've been looking into user research platforms, you've probably heard of Respondent.io—a platform where people claim you can make anywhere from $100 to $700 per hour just for sharing your opinions. Naturally, I had to check it out and see if it’s legit.

What is Respondent.io?

For those new to user research platforms, these companies connect everyday people with businesses looking for honest feedback to improve their products and services. Unlike standard survey sites that pay a few cents per survey, user research studies are more involved, often requiring participants to take part in:

  • One-on-one interviews

  • Focus groups

  • Usability tests

In my experience, market research and user research are among the best side hustles to earn real money—potentially even $1,000+ per month if you play your cards right.

How Does Respondent.io Work?

Respondent.io is a global platform that primarily operates in 21 regions. Signing up is straightforward, but it does have a professional focus. Even though the studies aren’t always directly tied to your job, the platform asks for detailed employment-related information.

Setting Up Your Profile

When you sign up, you'll need to provide:

  • Gender, ethnicity, and education level

  • Household income (optional)

  • City (to match with in-person studies, if applicable)

  • Employment details (industries, job skills, current employer info)

  • LinkedIn connection (recommended for credibility)

You get paid via PayPal, and once your profile is complete, you can browse available studies right from the homepage—even before signing up.

Each listing shows:

  • Payment amount

  • Estimated time commitment

  • Remote vs. in-person participation

Most of the opportunities are remote, so you can do this side hustle from the comfort of your home. You can also filter listings to match your interests and track past applications.

What Kinds of Studies Are Available?

The platform offers studies in a wide range of categories, including:

  • Technology

  • Health & wellness

  • Sales & marketing

  • Family & parenting

  • Shopping habits

To apply for a study, you’ll need to complete a screener survey to determine if you’re a good fit.

Keep in mind:

  • You may get screened out before completing the survey.

  • You won’t be notified if you’re not selected—only if you are.

  • You can only apply for 3 studies every 24 hours, so choose wisely.

My Experience Using Respondent.io

Here’s what I learned after using the platform:

  1. Studies aren’t hosted on Respondent.io. If selected, you’ll often be redirected to another company’s platform to complete the research.

  2. Being selected doesn’t always guarantee participation. Some surveys are first-come, first-served, so if you don’t act fast, the spots can fill up.

  3. My Success Rate: I’d estimate that I was selected for about 10-15% of the studies I applied for, which is lower than other research platforms I’ve used.

  4. Earnings: I was selected for a remote focus group for content creators, which paid $200 for 2 hours of work.

The Process:

  • After being selected, the company called to verify my information.

  • They checked my YouTube channel to confirm I was a content creator.

  • I joined a focus group with about 10 other people to discuss various topics.

  • Two weeks later, I was paid via PayPal (minus Respondent.io’s 5% fulfillment fee).

Final earnings: $190 for 2 hours—not bad for sharing my thoughts!

Is Respondent.io Worth It?

Legit? Yes, Respondent.io is 100% legit.

Can you earn $100+ per hour? Yes, but getting selected is not guaranteed.

Downsides?

  • Low selection rate (~10-15%)

  • 3 applications per day limit

Overall, Respondent.io is worth trying, especially since screeners only take about 5 minutes to complete. If selected, it can be a very lucrative way to make money online.
